Types of Water Heaters

Conventional Gas Water Heater

A conventional gas water heater operates by releasing hot water from the top of the tank when you turn on the hot water tap. Cold water enters the bottom of the tank to replace that hot water, ensuring that the tank is always full. A gas burner under the tank heats the water. A thermostat opens the gas valve as the water temperature falls. The valve closes when the temperature rises to the thermostat's setpoint.

Power Vent Water Heater

Draws combustion air from the space around the heater and uses a small fan to expel exhaust gases. The forced exhaust provides increased flexibility for heater location and prevents back drafting. A power vent heater pulls burner combustion air from inside the house immediately around the heater. A small blower fan drives exhaust gas through a flue and creates a vacuum to draw air into the combustion chamber. Natural gas water heaters get combustion air for burners from the outside through a vent pipe or inside the house around the heater. Burnt exhaust gases are expelled through a vertical roof flue, up a chimney, or via a horizontal vent through an outside wall.

Electric Water Heater

Have one or two electric elements, each with its own thermostat. With two electric elements, a standby element at the bottom of the tank maintains the minimum thermostat setting, while the upper demand element provides hot water recovery when demand heightens.
